Casa de Velasquez - Renovation of the historic building

Casa de Velázquez is located in the university campus of Madrid, near Moncloa Palace.

It is at once a centre for artistic creation and a research centre, that receives at the same time artists and researchers at the School of High Hispanic and Iberian Studies (EHEHI). The first buildings were inaugurated in 1928. In 1936, during the Spanish Civil War, a part of the main building was destroyed and rebuilt almost identically in 1959.

The establishment includes the administrative and technical services, the library, the cafeteria, 27 rooms, 5 artists’ studios, 9 workshops, 5 apartments as well as common spaces. The project consists in the restructuring of the libra-ry, reading rooms, storage rooms, recreation and conviviality spaces and the different accommodations.

It also includes the adjustment to building regulations of all the spaces open to public and residents, as well as the global update of all technical facilities, including a specific design for the lights. The basement programs are redistributed to offer a better performance to the library in matters of conviviality, access to the objects, control of the entrances as well as increasing the surface for book storage. The architectural intervention is based on the cur-rent distribution of volumes, proposing a respectful treatment so that the building is perceived «as if it had always been like this», for who visits the place for the first time.

The project responds to the urgent need of refurbishment of the building. The intervention is mainly based in the modernization of obsolete facilities, as well as the adequacy of the spaces for the development of its program. At the same time as updating the building, great importance is given to conservation of its character, historical and cultural, while maintaining its traditional conviviality. It is above all a subtle and sensitive work on the interior spaces paying special attention to lighting design and the comfort of utilization.
