Saint-Exupéry - Groupe scolaire : 6 classes de maternelle, 10 classes de primaire, 8 classes de collège, restauration et extension neuve - Madrid

In the area of La Moraleja, in the North of Madrid, Saint Exupéry School is an extension of the French Lycée situated in a building with a facade of brick, too small to accommodate the growing demand for registrations.

The project consists of the rehabilitation of the existing building (infant education), the construction of a new building (primary education on ground floor, secondary education on first floor, and collective activities) and the remodeling of the exterior spaces (sports fields, recreation yards, entrance and parking areas).

In response to the continental climate, a new two-storeys volume, which contains classrooms, is organized on an axis East/West around four patios that allow natural illumination and ventilation, creating a multitude of visual connections.

The façades alternate colored opaque glass modules and transparent glass. This colored volume makes a gesture of approach to the existing building by an overhang that covers the area of the entrance.

A second one-storey volume is created perpendicularly to the main volume on an axis North-South. It includes collective activities as the dining room and the library. As wink to the existing building, the facades and the roof are lined with brick, with some strategically placed large windows.
